June 2017

We have had an incredible start to the year, and the last 6 months have been testimony to how much can be achieved through passion, determination, hard work, and faith in the importance of the work we do. For those of you that were following our GlobalGiving Campaign- WE DID IT! Thank you to each person who supported Nourish both personally and professionally.  We look forward to having you join our journey and growth, and follow us through our monthly Newsletters.     ~ Sarah Bergs

Education

A huge part of our development as a child takes place in creche. For this reason having a safe, hygienic, stimulating learning environment is vitally important. Many children in rural villages around Acornhoek go to creches that struggle with poverty, lack of finances, training, resources, infrastructure and support. For this reason Nourish took on the RISE Early Childhood Development Outreach, to help children RISE to a better future. We help creches with ECD training, playgrounds, nutritious vegetable gardens, and so much more as funds allow.  This month we embarked on a GlobalGiving campaign to raise $ 5000 USD in only 3 weeks! We have over 200 children in 7 creches waiting for us to work with them and help make their creches a colourful, interactive place that will allow children to flourish. We took on the challenge and succeeded! Thank you to everyone who made this fundraising dream a reality. During this month we headed out to Boikhotso Creche to add colour, and a recycled playground. Happy smiles all round! Should you wish to get involved in our Sponsor a Child program or our RISE outreach, you can contribute via Paypal to nourish.org.za@gmail.com or visit our GlobalGiving page

Conservation

Working with schools to embed green-principles and a conservation ethos is a vital part of our Green Kidz program, and our commitment to the WESSA Eco School model. An inspiring workshop with school learners, teachers, and WESSA kickstarted us off to a great June, as schools decided how to become more GREEN! Thanks to our partnership with Wildlands Conservation Trust and Nedbank for making this workshop possible! Greening our future!

Economic Empowerment

Exciting month for two of our Business Incubator businesses, as both Shik Shack and NourishingMoringa were interviewed by Beautiful News ( News24). Look forward to sharing the video clips of the interviews with you once we have them. Also keep your eyes posted on our YouTube channel for the awesome video clips by Vusi Tshabalala to be uploaded soon!

Tourism

In the tourism sphere we have had an incredibly exciting month, as on the 2nd June we officially opened Shik Shack Community Backpackers ( offering off-grid eco camping, under the stars, with solar showers, compost toilets, and our common room made of Eco Bricks, natural cob cement, lime waterproofing, bottletop curtains, and a traditional cowdung floor) From the minute you arrive your inspired! We were honoured to have as our first guests, Marie & Lebo from Lebos Soweto Backpackers, who enjoyed bonfires and our proximity to Kruger. We look forward to sharing guests, and Fair Trade advice! For bookings you can go to our website. The money from each stay not only goes to the community members involved in running the tours and backpackers, but a percentage also goes back to Nourish – towards our sustainability model.

Sustainable Farming

Our chickens are FREE-RANGE! We now have 30 chickens pecking their way around Nourish. Thank you to African Dream Horse Safaris Volunteers who helped put the fence up, and are sponsoring the chicken food each month! Its so awesome – and we look forward to having our own free range chicken for the feeding scheme and our own eggs!

Thank you also to A Spring of Hope for fixing our borehole pump, so that our vegetable garden, and moringa orchard can now flourish over winter!

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
